Hedera
A heart-shaped mark surrounded by ivy, which was originally used to mark a paragraph break without the text moving to a new line or to indicate a passage of time.
They talk of seasons
guess I'm in a winter
'cause all the prayers I'm praying
seem to go nowhere
I've lost count of the days since
I opened the pages
starved myself of wisdom
now feeling like strangers
Let new mercies meet my eyes
in the morning light.
Remind me of love’s hand
when I'm coughing up hope
choking on sand in this desert sun
this wild ivy's
caught on religion.
I'm watching others get things
they never asked for
and I'm left wandering
if you're faithful
You must see how it looks,
how it feels cruel.
It hurts like heaven is dying
when I'm losing control.
Maybe you're answering prayers
I haven't prayed yet
or am I trying to control the narrative?
To wrestle or make sense of it
but sense is no match for suffering.
Let new mercies meet my eyes
in the morning light.
Remind me of love’s hand
when I'm coughing up hope
choking on sand in this desert sun
this wild ivy's
caught on religion.
This poem is from a poetry collection of mine called ‘I Pray Thee, Mark Me’ where I take unusual, defunct or unused glyphs and punctuation as an anchoring theme for the words written in tempest seasons.
