Self
2017

This book’s intention was to capture my identity in a unique way. Its purpose being to portray a visual narrative of a story from my childhood, featuring the action of engraving my name into our family car. Choosing a photographic response, I immersed the pages with items I own to collage into body segments - showing human similarities yet differences within personalities.

When I was 4 years old I learnt how to spell my name. After receiving praise for doing this I decided to overjoy my parent and scratch it into the car... quite a few times. Needlesss to say they didn’t think much of it. The story captures my identity in a unique way so I decided to play on this idea of what traits make my personality. With this in mind and a photographic response being a form to try, I started to create 10 images of aspects of my physical body but created them out of items I have in the room - yes in my Uni halls. Each one took between 2- 4 hours to complete and the aim was to capture an essence of my unique self in addition to the action of making my mark. I placed my identity (in the form of my name) on an object in my story, so I created my identity from my own objects in my narrative project. ‘Self’ was the title I chose as I discovered a few terms for personality which included ‘Selfdom’ however this seemed a little to long for the title - hence why I included some definitions at the beginning.
